A federal judge has closed the chapter on key parts of Florida’s censorious ban on school library books that conservatives deem “pornographic” and harmful to children.

A federal judge has struck a blow against Florida’s book bans, ruling against part of a DeSantis-backed law to suppress classics and modern novels.

Judge Carlos Mendoza of the U.S. Middle District Court of Florida ruled Wednesday that "the removal of many of these books [is] unconstitutional," noting that "many are classics, modern award winners,

DeSantis justified building the center that he dubbed "Deportation Depot," by saying the Trump administration needs the additional capacity to hold and deport more immigrants.

The new immigration detention center will be located at the Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson, Florida. The governor said the facility, which is near Lake City Airport, will not house people indefinitely.

Standing in front of the Baker Correctional Institution, closed since 2021, Gov. DeSantis unveiled the new name: the "Deportation Depot."
