Britain could recognise the State of Palestine with Hamas still in power, Downing Street has suggested. Sir Keir Starmer announced last week that the UK would recognise a Palestinian state at a meeting of the UN General Assembly in September unless Israel meets certain conditions.

Sky News host James Morrow says Western leaders who recognise a Palestinian state are giving Hamas the “moral high ground”.

Downing Street declined to say whether Britain would recognise Palestine with Hamas still in power. Number 10 also refused to be drawn on whether the release of all Israeli hostages was a condition for recognition,
