Investors were focused on President Trump's tariff policy on Thursday as the president unveiled plans for new chips tariffs that included exemptions for companies building in the U.S., or that have committed to build.

At the same time, Trump's hint of a carveout for coming duties on semiconductors boosted tech for a second consecutive day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) gained 0.6%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) was up 0.

President Donald Trump stunned markets Wednesday by announcing 100% tariffs on imported semiconductor chips — but major chip stocks rallied. Taiwanese chip giant TSMC's stock closed 4.9% higher. In South Korea, Samsung Electronics ended 2.5% higher while SK Hynix reversed losses of over 3% in early trade to close 1.4% up.
